GET TO KNOW THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Follow a different kind of rhythm.

Move between Shibuya’s crossings, Harajuku’s side streets and the trees around Meiji Jingu. Leave time for the architecture and shops of Omotesando.

The story of this neighbourhood

Street style, architecture, independent shops and room to breathe under the trees. This is a day to move between Tokyo’s public spectacle and the details you only notice on foot.

Shibuya and Harajuku have become shorthand for contemporary Tokyo, but the interest lies in the differences between their streets. The station area, side lanes and Omotesando’s broad avenue each invite a different pace.

Meiji Jingu and Yoyogi Park add a green centre to the route. Treat the shrine as a place of worship, then give the shopping streets time later in the day when more shops are open.

SIGHTS & STORIES

Find your way into the place.

Shibuya

Shibuya

Shibuya

Start around the scramble crossing and then move beyond it. Department stores, music, design and smaller shopping streets give the district more depth than its best-known view.

A closer look

Choose a few shops or a booked observation deck visit instead of attempting every new development.

The entrance to Takeshita Street in Harajuku

Harajuku

Harajuku

Takeshita Street is the busy introduction, but the surrounding lanes give you more room to browse clothes, small brands and cafés.

A closer look

Shops often open later than temples and parks, so save this part of the route for late morning or afternoon.

The main courtyard at Meiji Jingu

Meiji Jingu

Meiji Jingu

Walk through the forested approach towards the shrine and pause before returning to the shopping streets. Follow the signs for photography and shrine etiquette.

A closer look

The woodland paths change the rhythm of the day remarkably close to Harajuku Station.

Sunlight through trees in Yoyogi Park

Yoyogi Park

Yoyogi Park

Give yourself time on the park’s paths and open lawns. It is a good pause between neighbourhoods, especially if you want the day to include more than shops.

A closer look

The public park has its own entrances and character alongside the shrine grounds.

Omotesando’s tree-lined avenue at sunset

Omotesando

Omotesando

Follow the avenue for architecture and larger fashion houses, then turn into the side streets towards Aoyama for smaller shops and a meal.

A closer look

You can enjoy the buildings without a shopping list; leave enough time to look up as well as into windows.

Food in Shibuya

AT THE TABLE

A pause between streets.

Build in a proper meal and somewhere to sit while exploring the western side of Tokyo.

01 / COFFEE / SHIBUYA

Streamer Coffee Company Shibuya

The original Streamer café, a short walk from the busiest shopping streets. Stop for an espresso or a latte before continuing towards Harajuku.

02 / VEGAN / SUSHI / SHŌTŌ

Vegan Sushi Tokyo

Plant-based sushi in Shōtō, a short walk from central Shibuya. Reserve ahead and check the current menu.
