GET TO KNOW THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Stay out a little longer.

Start in Shin-Okubo, wander through Shinjuku and leave another evening for Iidabashi’s smaller lanes. Food and migration have shaped this part of Tokyo.

The story of this neighbourhood

Three different ways to spend an evening: the scale and lights of Shinjuku, a meal in Shin-Okubo, or the restaurants and smaller lanes above Iidabashi. Choose an atmosphere, then give it the evening.

Shinjuku is a city centre in its own right, shaped by its enormous transport interchange and layers of shopping, dining and entertainment. The experience changes from one side of the station to the other.

Shin-Okubo brings Korean food, cafés and shops into the plan. Iidabashi is the gateway to Kagurazaka, whose sloping streets and lanes offer a different kind of night out. These places work well as alternatives, with a return route considered before the evening begins.

Omoide Yokochō and Golden Gai offer small establishments with very different atmospheres; check menus and cover charges before sitting down. The neon streets are part of a working entertainment district.

Korean restaurants, supermarkets, cosmetics shops and cafés make this a good place to build an afternoon into dinner.

A closer look

Walk beyond the busiest stretch and choose a meal that interests you. It is close to Shinjuku, but deserves more than a hurried detour.

From Iidabashi, cross towards Kagurazaka and climb the main street before exploring its smaller lanes.

Restaurants, bars and the legacy of an entertainment quarter sit alongside ordinary neighbourhood life. Book dinner when a particular restaurant is the reason for coming.
